Program Summary

Public and private law as a course explores the fundamental principles governing legal systems and the distinction between laws that regulate the state’s relationship with individuals versus those that govern relationships between private parties. Public law encompasses constitutional, administrative, and criminal law, focusing on the structure of government institutions, the rights of individuals, and the enforcement of laws that maintain public order. It examines the role of the state in creating and enforcing laws, ensuring justice, and regulating public policies.

Private law, on the other hand, deals with legal relationships between individuals, organizations, and entities without direct state intervention. It includes areas such as contract law, tort law, property law, and family law, emphasizing personal and commercial interactions. This aspect of law ensures that private disputes are resolved fairly through legal frameworks that uphold agreements, protect property rights, and establish liability in cases of harm or negligence.

The course typically delves into legal theories, case studies, and statutory interpretations that highlight the differences and interconnections between public and private law. It provides an understanding of legal principles, the judiciary’s role, and how laws evolve to meet societal needs. By studying both branches, students gain insights into how laws maintain social order, protect rights, and regulate both governmental actions and private affairs.
