Program Summary

Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes and substances that occur within living organisms. It combines principles from biology and chemistry to explore the molecular mechanisms that drive life, including metabolism, enzyme function, genetic information flow, and cell signaling. The course typically covers the structure and function of biomolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates, as well as the biochemical pathways that sustain cellular function.

Students learn about the role of enzymes as biological catalysts, how energy is produced and utilized in cells, and the molecular basis of diseases. The course often includes laboratory work, where students apply techniques like spectrophotometry, chromatography, and electrophoresis to analyze biomolecules and biochemical reactions. Understanding biochemistry is essential in fields such as medicine, pharmacology, biotechnology, and genetics, as it provides insight into how cells and organisms function at a molecular level. It is a dynamic and interdisciplinary subject that bridges chemistry and biology to explain life’s processes in precise chemical terms.
