Program Summary

Classics is an academic discipline that explores the languages, literature, history, philosophy, art, and culture of the ancient Mediterranean world, primarily focusing on Greek and Roman civilizations. It involves the study of ancient texts in their original languages, such as Latin and Ancient Greek, as well as their translations. The course also examines the social, political, and intellectual developments of these civilizations and their lasting impact on modern society. Students may engage with epic poetry, drama, historical accounts, and philosophical works, analyzing themes that remain relevant today. Additionally, the course often includes aspects of archaeology and material culture, helping to reconstruct the daily lives and achievements of these ancient societies. Through an interdisciplinary approach, classics fosters critical thinking, linguistic skills, and a deep understanding of the foundations of Western thought and culture.
