Program Summary

Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine is a specialized field within dentistry that focuses on the study, diagnosis, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. The course provides a comprehensive understanding of the causes, mechanisms, clinical presentation, and treatment of various oral diseases, ranging from common conditions such as ulcers and infections to more complex disorders like oral cancer and autoimmune diseases. It integrates knowledge from pathology, microbiology, immunology, and systemic medicine to help students develop a strong foundation in identifying and managing oral diseases.

The course emphasizes both theoretical and practical aspects, including microscopic examination of tissues, clinical diagnosis, and differential diagnosis of oral lesions. Students learn to recognize pathological changes in the oral cavity that may be indicative of local or systemic diseases. The curriculum often includes training in biopsy procedures, radiographic interpretation, and laboratory investigations to aid in accurate diagnosis.

Oral Medicine, as a component of the course, focuses on the clinical management of patients with oral mucosal diseases, salivary gland disorders, orofacial pain, and conditions with systemic implications. It involves interdisciplinary collaboration with medical professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.

By the end of the course, students are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to diagnose oral diseases, provide appropriate treatment or referrals, and contribute to patient health by linking oral findings to systemic conditions. This field plays a crucial role in early disease detection and prevention, making it an essential aspect of dental and medical education.
