Program Summary

The guiding principle of the French Department is the imperative need to produce educated citizens, capable of communication effectively in French, thus making it possible for Nigeria to participate fully in international relations. The school offers a five-year and a four-year programme, each leading to the B.A (Honours) degree in French. In addition provides courses in elementary and intermediate French courses for students in other disciplines and who need the foreign language as an elective or a required ancillary course. The penultimate year of the programme is spent partly or entirely in a francophone country or at the Nigerian Language Village, Ajara, Badagry, an alternative programme available for students who are unable to travel out.

Requirements

UTME REQUIREMENTS; Credit passes in 5 SSCE/GCE O’Level subjects to include French and English. JAMB candidates without GCE ‘O’ Level/ SSCE credit pass in French but who must possess a credit in English are eligible for the 5-year B.A French course. DIRECT ENTRY REQUIREMENTS; i) A/L passes in two subjects including French ii) N.C.E Credit in French iii) ND Credit level pass in French iv) Higher Certificates in French attract a higher level of placement admitted at Direct entry. Candidates with French at NCE level are usually accepted for a three-year course leading to B.A French. Such other certificates as the Baccalaureat, DL (Diploma de Langue), DELF, DALF, and some certificates obtained at the Alliance Francaise or Francophone countries are acceptable as good entry certificates and may reduce the number of years spent in the Department.
