Program Summary
Jurisprudence and international law as a course focuses on the study of legal systems, principles, and norms that govern the relationships between states, individuals, and organizations across borders. It explores the foundational concepts of law, its nature, sources, and purposes, while also examining how legal rules are applied and interpreted in different contexts. Jurisprudence delves into the philosophy of law, asking questions about justice, rights, and the role of law in society. Students in this course learn to analyze and critique legal theories and systems, engaging with various schools of thought, including natural law, legal positivism, and legal realism.
International law, as part of this course, addresses the body of legal rules that govern interactions between states and other international actors, such as multinational organizations and individuals. It includes treaties, conventions, and customary practices that regulate matters like human rights, the use of force, trade, and environmental protection. Through the study of international law, students gain an understanding of how global legal frameworks are developed, interpreted, and enforced, as well as the challenges involved in maintaining legal order and resolving conflicts at the international level. This course prepares students to think critically about the legal complexities of a globalized world and the evolving nature of international relations.
