Program Summary

A course in foreign languages and literature typically explores the study of languages other than the student's native language, focusing on both the structure and use of the language as well as the cultural and literary works that emerge from the societies that speak it. The course aims to develop linguistic proficiency, enabling students to read, write, speak, and understand a foreign language at an advanced level. Alongside language acquisition, students delve into the literary traditions of the language, examining classic and contemporary works, exploring themes, historical contexts, and the development of literary styles. This course often emphasizes critical thinking, analysis, and comparison of different literary traditions, encouraging students to appreciate and engage with diverse cultural perspectives. By studying foreign languages and literature, students gain not only linguistic skills but also a deeper understanding of world cultures and histories, fostering a broader global awareness.
