Program Summary

Music as a course explores the art and science of sound, encompassing theory, history, performance, composition, and technology. It provides students with a deep understanding of musical elements such as melody, harmony, rhythm, form, and texture. Through both practical and theoretical study, learners develop skills in reading and writing music notation, analyzing different musical styles, and understanding the cultural and historical contexts of various genres. Performance is often a key component, with students engaging in vocal or instrumental practice, either individually or in ensembles. Composition and improvisation may also be explored, allowing students to create original pieces using traditional and modern techniques. The integration of music technology, including digital audio workstations and recording equipment, is increasingly emphasized, enabling students to produce and manipulate sound in innovative ways. Music courses may also include ear training, which sharpens listening skills and enhances the ability to recognize pitch, intervals, and chord progressions. By studying music, students cultivate creativity, discipline, and collaboration while gaining an appreciation for the diverse forms and functions of music in society.
